Random Side-effects of Business Travel

There’s no doubt that business travel has some serious pros and cons— but have you ever asked yourself what are some random side-effects of business travel that are so completely inane, they’re not worth thinking about? Of course you haven’t, but here are a few (I will likely add to this list frequently):

  1. You can load up the bluetooth list on your iPhone with 5+ different rental car connections, probably many with the same name. I myself am collecting “My Kicks” connections on my phone with the goal of one day automatically connecting to a rental car again someday.

  2. You will know more about the location of every gas station within a 5-mile radius of a random airport than you will about the gas stations in your own town. Pump speed? Candy selection? Windshield squeegee? All locked away in the brain, displacing precious childhood memories.

  3. You know what hotel chains have partnered with which exercise equipment companies. Nothing beats watching TV in silence without captions on a treadmill where the channel buttons have been worn off! Nothing!

  4. You have a lot of hotel points, but not enough to use on a full overnight stay.

  5. You’ve developed the habit of grabbing 2-14 Chobanis from the continental breakfast to keep in your backpack for the day, and you’ve optimized their space utilization with your travel necessities. On the down side, you always forget a spoon.

  6. You can activate the seat heater in every Nissan crossover while blindfolded. Can even drive like that to your hotel of choice.

  7. You’ve asked yourself the question, “I wonder if there’s an earlier flight out,” more times than you can recall.

  8. You have the phone app for every rental car service, airline, and hotel on your phone. You WILL go back and forth many times a year on whether or not to leave them on a home screen, or just let them sit in your app library.

  9. You start to convince yourself that one of the wheels on your roll-aboard suitcase is starting to go.

  10. If you are a window person, you have started to develop the habit of booking seats on different sides of the plane for layovers or for departure/return flights. The obvious goal is to help your neck hurt less from sleeping against the wall of the aircraft, but the likely outcome is pain on both sides of the neck and shoulders.
